Julien’s 3 tips to save 30 minutes a day

11 July 2017

Two years ago, Julien had to reinvent the way he worked to keep his work and family life in tune. This young father’s daily routine changed completely when his son was born. Today, he’s got a few tips to share with us that have helped him to save 30 minutes a day for his son!

Plan your day

Every morning, Julien has a routine: “I start by planning everything I’m supposed to do that day. Then, before I get started, I prioritize the tasks on my list.” Listing your daily tasks is a great way to see what’s coming in the day ahead, decide what your priorities are, and organize your schedule. A clear timeline for your day will help reduce stress.

Listing your tasks is also the best way to distinguish essential tasks from optional ones and urgent items from others that can wait a bit. And that, in turn, makes it easier to meet your deadlines.

What if something unexpected comes up? No need to panic, just postpone some of your less urgent items.

It’s OK to delegate

« At first, I insisted on doing everything myself. The problem was, I had to leave every night at 6:30 p.m. to pick up my son at the sitter’s… After a few weeks, I realized that I couldn’t take on everything without help! »

Julien is right: There’s strength in numbers! Delegation is the key.

Delegating tasks may sometimes seem like a slow process, but spending a few minutes to ask for help (and carefully explain a task to your colleague) can really pay off!

Especially when modern collaborative tools like Beesbusy let you ask someone to complete a task with just a few minutes’ effort: provide a brief one-paragraph explanation, a deadline, and a few helpful attachments and you’re done!

Plus, it’s always useful to get an outside perspective!

Looking back on your day

PInstead of going home and obsessing over the events of the day, Julien suggests taking “no more than a few minutes in the evening to go over what you’ve accomplished and what you have left to do.” This quick review lets you start the next day on the right foot, with a clear understanding of what you need to do.

It’s also a good way to identify sticking points in your projects so you can find ways to resolve them. Here as well, make sure to share your concerns with other project stakeholders! Communication is key.

Summary

  • Start every day by listing all your tasks
  • Prioritize tasks when planning your day and put off the ones that can wait a while
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help
  • At the end of the day, review what you’ve accomplished and what remains to be done
  • Enjoy time with your family and friends!
